Permission to Travel: On July 25, 2024, U.S. District Judge Jesus Bernal authorized Cardiff to travel to Ireland for a duration of ten days. This decision was made despite objections from the Department of Justice (DOJ), which labeled Cardiff as a flight risk due to his history of court order violations and dishonesty. Judge Bernal’s order required Cardiff to submit a detailed travel itinerary to the U.S. Probation Office.

Legal Concerns and Proceedings: The DOJ expressed concerns that once abroad, Cardiff could potentially travel to jurisdictions lacking extradition treaties with the United States, thereby evading legal proceedings. These concerns were heightened by Cardiff’s previous non-compliance with court orders and instances of providing false information to the court. Notably, around the same time, Cardiff’s legal counsel filed a motion to withdraw from his case, citing unmet contractual obligations, which the court approved.

Current Status: As of now, Cardiff’s criminal trial is scheduled to commence on September 3, 2024. If convicted on all counts, he faces a potential sentence of up to 57 years in prison. Despite the gravity of the charges, the court has permitted his temporary international travel, a decision that has sparked debate given the circumstances.
